Fill-in-the-blanks storytelling can be a very fun story/creative writing exercise to do with middle school students and with older children.
Write a story before the session and leave out key words. Get the children to contribute by asking for whatever numbers, nouns, adjectives or verbs are needed. The children can then write stories of their own and complete them in partners.
An example:
_______________ was feeling _____________ one day. So, s/he thought to him/herself, "I (name) (adjective)
want to __________ today. _____________ would be fun"
(verb) (same verb)
Completed:
Jason was feeling silly one day. So he thought to himself, I really want to bounce today. Bouncing would be fun!
This activity would be effective at least as an icebreaker and will get the kids laughing!
